Worth your time

What Agia Roumeli does best

Agia Roumeli is a village west of Chora Sfakion at the exit of the Samaria Gorge, according to the Municipality of Sfakia, which says access is only by boat. The Region of Crete notes that walkers who have crossed the gorge can spend the night there. Among the boats ANENDYK publishes from Agia Roumeli are those east to Loutro and Chora Sfakion and west to Sougia, valid from 7 September to 31 October 2026.

  1. A shipyard in antiquity

The Municipality of Sfakia says Agia Roumeli was a major shipyard in antiquity and later under Venetian rule.

  2. A village that moved

The municipality records that the residents moved from the old settlement 2 km north, inside the gorge, after the river overflowed and destroyed most of the houses in November 1954.

  3. A Venetian bridge

The Region of Crete points to a Venetian bridge over the river that comes down through the gorge.
