What Sitia does best

Sitia is where Crete's tourist gradient finally flattens out: an unhurried port town at the far eastern end of the island, with an amphitheatre of white houses above a working harbour and a beach that runs east from the centre without a single high-rise. Getting there is the point — it is the longest of the eastern corridors, and KTEL Heraklio–Lasithi names Sitia explicitly in its published departures from both Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.

The harbour front

Sitia's waterfront is where the town actually lives — a long line of tavernas and cafés facing fishing boats rather than tour operators.

The archaeological museum

The town museum holds finds from the eastern end of the island, including material from the Minoan sites of the Sitia district that never leaves for Heraklion.

Vai and Toplou beyond

The palm-forest beach at Vai and the fortress-like Toplou monastery lie further east again. Both are onward journeys from Sitia in their own right — check the operator for what is published on your date.
