What Elafonisi does best
Elafonisi is the shallow, pink-tinged lagoon at Crete's south-western corner — a sandbar you can wade across to a protected islet, with dunes and juniper behind it. It is a long way from anywhere: the road out of Chania climbs and winds for a good part of the morning, which is exactly why the bus leg deserves planning rather than improvisation. KTEL Chania–Rethymno lists Elafonisi among its published destinations, and it is one of the clearest examples on the island of a corridor whose service level rises and falls with the season.
Pink-tinged sand
The famous blush comes from crushed shell fragments and shows most strongly in patches near the waterline rather than across the whole beach. It is a texture, not a filter.
A protected landscape
Elafonisi is a designated conservation area with dune vegetation and nesting habitat. Marked paths and rope lines exist for a reason — the dunes behind the beach are the fragile part.

- This is a strongly seasonal corridor: beach services in western Crete are published for part of the year only, and the operator's date ranges shift between years.
- There is minimal shade and limited facilities — bring water, sun cover and anything you will want during a long afternoon.
