What Matala does best

Matala is a small bay on Crete's south coast where a sandstone headland is honeycombed with rock-cut chambers, carved in antiquity and famously squatted by travellers in the late nineteen-sixties. The village that grew around it is tiny, the beach is a single crescent, and the sunsets face straight down the bay. The cliff caves
