The cliff caves
The chambers cut into the north side of the bay are a fenced archaeological site with its own opening arrangements and entry — check on arrival rather than assuming free access.
South-coast cave bay
KTEL Heraklio–Lasithi publishes Matala as a south-coast destination from Heraklion and issues separate announcements for extra services around the village's summer festival. Service on southern corridors is seasonal, so check the operator's current publication for your date rather than assuming a year-round pattern.

Worth your time
Matala is a small bay on Crete's south coast where a sandstone headland is honeycombed with rock-cut chambers, carved in antiquity and famously squatted by travellers in the late nineteen-sixties. The village that grew around it is tiny, the beach is a single crescent, and the sunsets face straight down the bay. KTEL Heraklio–Lasithi publishes Matala among its destinations from Heraklion, including additional services announced around the village's summer festival.
The chambers cut into the north side of the bay are a fenced archaeological site with its own opening arrangements and entry — check on arrival rather than assuming free access.
A marked footpath climbs over the headland south of the village to a smaller red-sand cove. It is a genuine walk with loose footing, not a stroll — proper shoes and water.
The Minoan palace of Phaistos and the Roman-era site of Gortyna lie inland on the Messara plain between Heraklion and the coast, and are commonly paired with a Matala trip.
