What Hersonissos does best

Hersonissos sits on the strip of coast that runs east from Heraklion towards Agios Nikolaos: a resort town at sea level with quieter hill villages a short climb above it. It is one of the better-connected places on the island for a car-free stay, because the same operator publishes both the intercity corridor along the coast and intermunicipal services within the Municipality of Chersonissos.

The old harbour

The small working harbour at the town's western end keeps a different character from the main strip, and the Roman-era fish tanks cut into the rock beside it are visible from the waterfront.

Hill villages above

Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos sit on the slope behind the resort — stone lanes, tavernas and a noticeably cooler evening than the coast road.

A practical base for the east

Because the coastal corridor runs through town, Hersonissos works as a car-free base for reaching both Heraklion and the eastern towns — check each direction's publication separately.

  • The coast road is one long ribbon of development; the stop name matters more here than in a compact old town.
  • Intercity coaches and municipal services are published separately and are not synchronized with each other.
