What Frangokastello does best

Frangokastello is a castle on the shore of the Sfakia coast. The Greek National Tourism Organisation says the Venetians built it in the mid-14th century to protect the area from pirate raids and from uprisings by the Sfakians, and that it became a symbol of resistance after the battle of 1828 against the Ottomans. KTEL Chania–Rethymno's edition valid from 26 September 2026 publishes Chora Sfakion–Frangokastello in both directions; there is no Chania–Frangokastello row.

  1. A 14th-century fort

The Greek National Tourism Organisation dates the castle to the mid-14th century, built by the Venetians against pirate raids and uprisings by the Sfakians.

  2. The battle of 1828

The national tourism organisation describes Frangokastello as a symbol of resistance after the battle of 1828, fought against the Ottomans.

  3. The castle of the Franks

The Region of Crete explains the name as “the castle of the Franks”, meaning the Catholics, a name the local people gave the new fortress.

Good to know

  • The Greek National Tourism Organisation describes the beach in front of the castle as having shallow water, and says the castle hosts cultural events every summer.
  • From Chania, the published rows are Chania–Chora Sfakion and then Chora Sfakion–Frangokastello: check that they connect on your date.
  • Read the Sunday group for the return to Chora Sfakion: it prints fewer departures.
