Elounda faces the sheltered water of Mirabello Bay, a short distance north of Agios Nikolaos along a coast road of olive terraces and salt pans. It is best known as the mainland side of the crossing to Spinalonga, the Venetian island fortress that later served as a leper colony, and for the submerged remains of ancient Olous near the causeway.
